Life Beyond Potomac River

I bumped into this old abandoned blog of mine when commenting to a blog elsewhere and being prompted to use my Google credentials for posting my comment.

This reminded me of this blog — and the fact that my life has been “beyond Potomac River” for over a year and a half now: In Haiti.

During this time I’ve been very inactive in social media and putting my effort more on “real life things” that take significantly more time and effort to get done (in Haiti).

I hope to post more often in the future (as a number of my friends and family members have requested). I “just” need to figure out if I’ll use this or some other blog to do that. .. And then do it.

Meanwhile — and in any case — you can peak into the things I do while in Haiti via my Facebook page, Twitter and–perhaps giving the best picture of my activities–by checking out my OpenStreetMap edits . My other online existence is most thoroughly accessed via my Google Profile.

Uusi vuosi, uusi vuosikymmen, uudet kujeet

Avoimuus uutena(?) perusparadigmana?

Jostain on aloitettava. Suurinkin marssi alkaa yksittäisellä askelella. .. Joka ei edes aina vie eteenpäin.

Tyhjän sivun (lue: vähän, harvoin ja hajanaisesti kirjaillun blogin) kammo(?), Epäonnistumisen pelko, Väärinymmärretyksi tulemisen angsti, noin muutama mainitakseni, ovat luullakseni yksiä suurimmista syistä siihen, että ihmiset eivät jaa kokemuksiaan ja ajatuksiaan enemmän ja laajemmin (lue: netissä). Eikä em. listaa olisi vaikea jatkaa yhtä tummilla lausumilla.

Siinä missä vanha viisaus kertoo, että tieto (tai tarkemmin sanottuna: tiedon panttaaminen ja epäsymmetrisesti jakaminen) on valtaa, alkaa olla yhä selvempää, että tällä vuosisadalla/-tuhannella(?!) tiedon (ja kokemusten) jakaminen on valtaa.

Tuosta viimevuosituhantisesta (ja sitäkin edeltäneestä) tiedon ja sen panttaamisen vallasta on juuri nyt, uuden vuosituhannen ensimmäisen vuosikymmenen viisastuttamana, hyvä ottaa välitön pesäero, ilmoittaa näin koruttomasti sivulauseessa Avoin yhteiskunta -yhdistys perustetuksi, piut paut välittää (tämän tai muiden kirjoitusten) kielioppikysymyksistä - ainakaan näin henkilökohtaisessa blogissa, ja alkaa toimia tämän edellä viittelöidyn "avoimuuden ja jakamisen" paradigman mukaisesti.

Tässä tulikin samalla uuden vuoden ja vuosikymmenen lupaus lausutuksi ääneen.

"Todisteena #1" esitän Naamakirjan (tuon suljetun järjestelmän) sisällä esittämäni kommentin erään ystävän angstiseen kommenttiin, josta röyhkeästi lupaa kysymättä julkaisen pienen osan:

"(...) Kun ei tää ihmisen elo nyt oikein vörki, aina pitää olla kapinallinen kaikessa (...) ja masentua kaikesta. Höh."

... sekä itseoikeutetusti oman kommenttini tähän:

Ihan vakavasti, masennusta / nykysuomeksi: syvää - ja vähän vähemmänkin syvää - vitutusta on syytä kuunnella ja helliä sen ansaitsemalla intiimillä läheisyydellä.

Masennuksesta puhuttaessa, sattumalta silmiini osunut Unstuck (James Gordon) käsittelee asiaa mielestäni Oikeassa kokonaisuudessa (.. sen pohjalta mitä olen sitä sieltä täältä selaillut, kirjan alkupäästä lukenut) - vastaavia fiksuja kokonaisuuksia on varmasti iso kasa muitakin.

Gordonin lähestyminen menee paljon henkisen puolen sisällön tärkeyteen ja komppaa tässä paljon sitä mitä/mistä es. Anthony de Mello, Pema Chödrön, Eckhart Tolle ja/tai Gandhi kirjoittavat/-ivat.

Connecting online & spheres of intimacy

The questions of how, through which services and with whom to connect online are in many people's minds. The social media scene is developing rapidly and the social norms within it are still in their earlyish stages of development.

Here's a reply I sent to a friend of a friend (whom I've never met to my knowledge .. pardon my bad memory if I have!) that explains my thoughts on the issue for my part:

I appreciate your friend request. The web is such a wonderful enabler for serendipitous connections - which often prove to be immensely valuable! I find it quite interesting to see & follow how the social media scene is in a turbulent phase of development, how practices to use different tools are evolving continuously and quite rapidly - and how different people use different tools and services so .. well, differently. As for me and connecting with people online: While I like to establish connections with new interesting people in many services I use -- I think that that's really the only way to allow the power of serendipity (The Long Tail, really) to kick in -- I realize that Facebook for me is essentially a place to foster connections I've created elsewhere (in the physical world, other social media services, FB groups, etc). For me it's a question of privacy and different spheres if intimacy. But as said, I'm always open to connecting with new interesting people. My preferred mode of connecting with new people is microblogging: I can be found at http://twitter.com/jaakkoh and http://identi.ca/jaakkoh & http://jaakkoh.jaiku.com (for opensource alternatives). Of these Twitter is my current "de facto standard" of online discussions. Other social media services I use can be found via my Google Profile. Cheers, -Jaakko

The Bailout - Coming this January

I ran into this _super_ hilarious pseudo ad about the Big Three (automaker) bailout (thanks to my brother).

Ps. This post was sent directly from Picasa. I want to check if/how email posting to Blogger works like this.. And realize that at least there's no way to make hyperlinks (as that should be done in HTML/Rich text, which Picasa email doesn't support). Hopefully at least the attached photo shows decently.

Google Street View in DC area & George's good service

Google Maps Street View has finally arrived to Washington DC area (along with the expansion of the Street view to nearly all of the US).

Street View is just fantastic. It enables anyone to take very real-feel virtual walks. Quite convenient for many situations.
